World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)
The WMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is the UN system's authoritative voice on state and behaviour of the Earth's atmosphere, interaction with the oceans, climate and distribution of water resources.
MeteoSwiss contributes to programs of the WMO:
Swiss GAW-Program (Global Atmosphere Watch)
The program to watch the global atmosphere collects and analyses data on the chemical composition of the atmosphere.
Swiss contribution to GCOS (Global Climate Observing System)
The Global Climate Observing System is intended to collect all necessary observations and information relevant to climate: physical, chemical and biological properties of the atmosphere, the oceans and the earth.
RA VI Pilot Regional Climate Centre Network (RCC)
A pilot network of three RCC consortia was established in 2009 for the WMO region RA VI (Europe and Middle East):
RCC Node on Data Services
RCC Node on Climate Monitoring
RCC Node on Long-range Forecasting
Swiss contribution to the network of European Meteorological Services (EUMETNET)
EUCOS (EUMETNET Composite Observing System)
Formation of an European composite observing system to optimize quality of short range forecasts over Europe.
ECSN (European Climate Support Network)
Provision of national and European
a) high quality climate data and products
b) services and advice based on the Members climate expertise
Work programs:
- European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D) project
- Showcase EUROGRID (S-EUROGRID)
- Generation of Climate Monitoring Products (GCMP), new under RCC-CM
- European activities on climate change szenarios:
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
The IPCC was established to provide the decision-makers and others interested in climate change with an objective source of information about climate change. Its role is to assess the risk of human-induced climate change, its observed and projected impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation.
