Digitization and homogenization of historical climate series
Learning from the past, for the future. Homogeneous historical climate series are regarded as an important reference for research into climate change. Within the project DigiHom (2007-2011) time series of temperature, precipitation and sunshine duration of all Swiss NBCN-stations are digitized from historical documents. Afterwards influences on data series not caused by climatological factors, such as site relocation, were eliminated (homogenized).

Swiss Climate Scenarios CH2011

Together with four partner instituts MeteoSwiss has generated the newest Swiss Climate Change Scenarios CH2011 which provide a new assessment of how climate may change over the 21st century in Switzerland. See also Swiss Climate Scenarios CH2011

Icing frequency

Based on the analyses of the weather forecast model COSMO-2 a map of the icing frequency has been compiled. The evaluation of icing risk for meteorological instruments or other structures can be estimated qualitatively and helps for the planning of wind energy projects.

Floods of August 2007

Severe and extensive rainfall caused flooding on August 8 and 9, 2007, particularly in the three-lakes area, the Central Plateau and in northwestern Switzerland.

The frequency of extreme wind speeds in Switzerland

  • Wind storms are among the most important natural hazards in our country. In December 1999, storm Lothar caused considerable damage. How often are extreme wind speeds likely to happen in Switzerland? The frequency of an extreme wind event can be modelled in statistical terms. (08/2009)

Climate report of Kanton Graubünden

  • On behalf of the Office "Natur und Umwelt Graubünden" MeteoSwiss has analysed the climate change in Graubünden. The report shows, that different climate elements have significantly changed even in Graubünden. During the last 100 years temperature has risen about 1 – 2°C. Actual national climate scenarios pre-estimate another 2 – 3°C until 2050. (07/2009)

2008 and climate change

  • A lot of people remember the year 2008 rather cool. In contrast to that the analysis of MeteoSwiss demonstrates that 2008 was about 1°C warmer than normal. What is "normal" during times the climate changes globally? (03/2009)

Climate change is a fact - and now?

  • The most important results of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (2007) from a Swiss perspective, Report of OcCC  with collaboration of MeteoSwiss.
